From smart bins to automation in recycling plants, computer vision is enabling new ways to reduce waste and increase recycling rates by measuring and optimising different processes in waste management. In a high noise environment where there can be almost an infinite number of ways in which the rubbish type can be changed and manipulated, recent advances in AI deep learning has given rise to a way to solve such complex visual tasks. Coupled with the decline in cost of robotics, there is an opportunity to develop cutting edge computer vision products in an economically viable way.
